Affirmations Really In Action

In perusing the Lesson Plans section of this site, you will see a lesson entitled “I Think, I Am” – Affirm That and a Warm-up activity called “Affirmations In Action, where students are taught a series of activities about the powerful use of affirmations in daily life.  Many of us know that by simply replacing a negative thought with a more positive one, we are creating great shifts in our mind and thus shaping our lives into what we want them to be.  Society has begun to pick up on the principles of such actions.  Affirmations ARE all around us…we just have to have our eyes open to seeing and receiving them.  Amazingly, not necessarily surprisingly, this is what I observe my students beginning to do.  What’s incredible about children is that their belief systems have yet to fully develop and be filled to capacity.  Before being completely inundated by the thoughts and beliefs of society, media, parents, friends and school, kids have a chance to choose what they wish to believe.  Hopefully with the knowledge that they can choose to believe in the positive – they will!

The concepts contained in these lessons are all about planting seeds.  Once planted, individuals have the innate ability to expand their awareness.  Once awareness begins to grow, the real magic begins to happen.  I try to plant a number of positive seeds throughout each school day whether it’s through direct teaching or casual conversation and then I detach from it.

However, day after day, I am fortunate enough to get to see these seeds germinating and blossoming into something quite beautiful.   I had two such examples just this week in class.  The first was when a little girl, aged 9, came up to me first thing in the morning full of excitement.  She said to me that she found an old bag in her closet from a purchase that she had made at a tween’s fashion store called Justice.  But what she had not noticed before was that the bag that her purchases came in, had positive statements written all along the bottom.  She was ecstatic at this discovery.  The bag displayed expressions such as be positive, share a smile, be an individual, love you for you, share your light, creativity is contagious etc.  It wasn’t until the seeds had been planted, that this particular student noticed these ideas in the real world around her.

How many times do we look at something without actually seeing it?  How many other kids look at the same bag and just see bright colours and fashion and miss the whole important and beautiful message that it displays?

The second example came from another student, this time a boy, who had been reading a book at home for pleasure.  In the book was a line that said: Life is beautiful, the world is marvelous, and I love everyone… he was thrilled to share with me that he had identified this sentence as a positive affirmation – a beautiful one at that.

These were both added to our walls and windows of classroom affirmations…the bag and the quote from the book now stay in our classroom as permanent reminders that when the student is ready, the teacher appears.  Well, these kids are ready and teachers are appearing all around them in their daily lives.  Luckily, because of the planted seeds, the kids have enough awareness to recognize it!
