For as long as I can remember, I was sure I would become a teacher.  For me, the word teacher has evolved over the years and has become a much different meaning than I once thought.  I have a strong sense that I am meant to help others seek their purpose, understand their true worth, and develop the best life that they can for themselves.  While I continue to be on this path and lifelong journey myself, I have attained so many of the tools and skills required since finishing my formal educational years.  In reflecting on my ‘school days,’ I am content with the knowledge that I received; yet, feel this sense that I could have learned even more.  How many of us say, ‘if only I had known then, what I know now…’  I know that’s possible.  I am passionate about giving students a head start to what magic life has to offer.  It is through this site, that I wish to give you lesson plans, educational resources, food for thought, character education programs, quick but inspiring ideas, and so much more, with the intent of providing you with what I wish my teacher had taught me™.

After being educated in the Concurrent Education Program at Queen’s University in Ontario, I was fortunate enough to secure a teaching position with the Peel District School Board and have been teaching with them since 2003.  As a late teen, I became interested in my own self-development journey and I began to examine my life path through a variety of different modalities and lenses.  As I gained knowledge about mindfulness and saw the way that it had transformed my life, I often wished that I had developed these skills and reaped the benefits even earlier on in life.  As a result, I knew that I must pass these wonderful gifts on to my own students and New Age Teacher™ was born.  What I wish my teacher had taught me™, is now a reality for each of my students.  I experience great joy each day as I implement the New Age Teacher™ activities and lessons in my own classroom and watch the incredible transformation of my students and the positive responses from their parents.  My writing has been published in two books, I Am From and Celebrating 365 Days of Gratitude.  I have developed my first meditation CD for children and youth.  I am also an active participant of a non-profit organization, Discover Mindfulness, to help bring mindfulness into the curriculum at a Ministry level.  It is my hope that my passion for teaching and for mindfulness will help to inspire others in co-creating a new form of learning for all.

I learn through all of the teachers I am surrounded by each day – parents, friends, acquaintances, children, and strangers alike.  Therefore, I would like more than anything to hear from you on this New Age Teacher site.  Help to be a lighthouse for change in education by trying out these lessons and responding with your feedback.  Please feel free to add any other ideas of your own.

Since the beginning of my career, I have focused on more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic.  Embedded in each of my lessons, is the greater goal of nurturing the development of my students’ character.  I have always assumed that every student has the ability to live up to their full potential.  I see my role as a catalyst to students who are on a journey of growth and self-discovery; it is my goal and intent to help other educators realize the same importance, and have the tools and knowledge to facilitate this process.  I welcome you to join me on this journey and as New Age Teachers.

    Hi!! My name is Erin Byrd and I am a high school special education teacher. I am 25 years old and I attended Appalachian State University in Boone NC. I take pride in my willingness to help others, especially children. I also have been searching for other programs out there using a more mindful self-discovery path in my instruction. I would love to chat with someone if possible and talk about my options as an advocate for my students and their education.
